What Should I Look For When Choosing a Chiropractor in Port Elizabeth?

One of the most common questions people ask before booking an appointment is:

"How do I know if I've found a good chiropractor?"

It's a fair question.

After all, most people don't know how to compare chiropractors.

They might compare restaurants.

They might compare cars.

But when it comes to healthcare, it can be difficult to know what really matters.

After nearly twenty years in practice, my answer has changed.

When I was younger, I probably would have focused on qualifications, techniques, or technology.

Today, I think the answer is much simpler.

A great chiropractor is someone who takes the time to understand why the problem happened, develops a clear process to improve it, measures progress along the way, and helps prevent it from returning.

Everything else is secondary.

Start With Your Goal

The first thing to understand is that choosing a chiropractor depends on what you are trying to achieve.

If your goal is temporary relief, your decision may be different than if your goal is long-term improvement.

Many people seek care because they are in pain.

That is completely understandable.

But if the problem has been developing for years, it is worth asking whether you simply want temporary relief or whether you want to understand and address the underlying cause.

The chiropractors I personally value are the ones who focus on understanding the root cause of a problem and creating a process to improve it.

Look For Someone Who Wants To Understand The Cause

One of the biggest differences between a good chiropractor and a great chiropractor is curiosity.

A great chiropractor asks questions.

Lots of them.

They want to understand:

How did this problem start?

What makes it worse?

What makes it better?

What stresses are affecting the body?

What has been tried before?

Why has the problem continued?

The goal is not simply to find where it hurts.

The goal is to understand why it hurts.

In my experience, this deeper level of questioning often reveals patterns that would otherwise be missed.

Look For A Proper Examination

If my wife or children were seeing a chiropractor in another city, one of the things that would concern me most is a lack of examination.

I would be cautious if a chiropractor simply asked where it hurt and then immediately started treatment.

A proper examination helps identify:

Postural changes

Movement restrictions

Areas of dysfunction

Muscle imbalance

Neurological findings

Contributing factors

Just as importantly, it allows the chiropractor to explain what they have found and how they plan to address it.

Patients deserve to understand what is happening in their bodies.

Look For A Clear Plan

One of the biggest frustrations people have with healthcare is uncertainty.

They don't know:

What is wrong.

What the plan is.

How long it might take.

How progress will be measured.

A good chiropractor should be able to explain:

What they believe is contributing to the problem.

What the goals of care are.

What changes they expect to see.

How progress will be monitored.

No healthcare professional can guarantee outcomes.

But they should be able to explain the process clearly.

The Biggest Mistake People Make

One of the most common mistakes I see is expecting a chronic problem to change instantly.

Sometimes dramatic improvements happen quickly.

But many chronic problems have taken years to develop.

It is unrealistic to compare a natural healing process to taking a painkiller.

Painkillers are designed to create a rapid change in symptoms.

Chiropractic care is often focused on helping the body function better over time.

Those are two very different things.

Many people try chiropractic, experience some improvement, stop care too early, and then wonder why the problem returns.

Years later they have repeated the same cycle many times.

They are not necessarily getting worse.

But they are not truly recovering either.

They are simply managing repeated episodes of the same problem.

How Should Progress Be Measured?

This is an area that I think deserves more attention.

Most people assume progress should be measured by symptoms alone.

Certainly symptoms matter.

If headaches are less frequent or back pain improves, that is important.

But symptoms can sometimes be misleading.

Many people have significant dysfunction before symptoms appear.

That is why I believe function should also be measured.

Depending on the chiropractor and technique used, this may include:

Posture

Range of motion

Muscle tension

Muscle strength

Movement patterns

Neurological findings

Functional capacity

The question should not only be:

"Do I feel better?"

It should also be:

"Am I functioning better?"

What Separates A Good Chiropractor From A Great Chiropractor?

After nearly twenty years, I believe the difference is not necessarily technique.

It is not necessarily how long they spend with you.

It is not necessarily how many qualifications they have.

The best chiropractors I know are exceptionally good at understanding people.

They work hard to understand:

Why the problem developed.

What needs to change.

What process is required.

How to prevent the problem from returning.

That requires good questioning.

Good listening.

Good communication.

And a genuine desire to understand the individual sitting in front of them.

Final Thoughts

If you are choosing a chiropractor, look beyond the adjustment itself.

Look for someone who:

Performs a thorough examination.

Explains what they find.

Focuses on understanding the cause.

Creates a clear process.

Measures progress.

Helps you prevent recurrence.

In the long run, that approach will usually create more value than simply chasing symptoms.

Because the goal is not only to feel better.

The goal is to function better and stay better.

FAQ SECTION

How do I know if a chiropractor is good?

A good chiropractor performs a thorough examination, explains their findings, creates a clear plan, and measures progress over time.

Should a chiropractor do an examination first?

Yes. A proper examination helps identify the cause of the problem and guides appropriate care.

How many visits should chiropractic care take?

This depends on the severity, duration, and nature of the problem. Chronic issues often require more time than recent injuries.

Should chiropractic care work immediately?

Some people experience rapid changes, but chronic problems often improve through a process rather than an instant fix.

What should a chiropractor measure?

Many chiropractors assess posture, movement, muscle function, neurological findings, and symptom changes to track progress.
