How Much Does a Chiropractor Cost in Port Elizabeth? Fees, Medical Aid and What to Expect

If you're considering seeing a chiropractor in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), one of your first questions is probably:

How much is it going to cost?

It's a perfectly reasonable question.

And I think patients deserve a straightforward answer before making an appointment.

Chiropractic fees can vary between practices, depending on what's included in the consultation, how long it takes and the type of care provided.

But there's another question worth considering.

What are you actually getting for the fee?

A consultation shouldn't simply be about receiving an adjustment. It should also help you understand your symptoms, whether chiropractic care is appropriate and what your options are.

Let's look at what chiropractic care costs, how medical aid works and what to consider when comparing practitioners.

Chiropractic Fees in Port Elizabeth: What Can You Expect to Pay?

At my practice in Walmer, Gqeberha, the current fees are:

New patient consultation: Fee: R850

Follow-up chiropractic consultation: Fee: R650

These are the fees at my practice, not a citywide average. Other chiropractors in Port Elizabeth may charge different amounts.

What Does the Initial Consultation Include?

Your first appointment is usually more involved than a routine follow-up.

At PE Chiropractic and Healthcare, a new patient consultation generally takes approximately 30–45 minutes.

During this appointment, I aim to understand your symptoms, medical history and how the problem is affecting your daily life.

Depending on your presentation, the assessment may include:

  • A detailed discussion of your symptoms and health history

  • Examination of spinal movement and relevant joints

  • Orthopaedic and neurological testing where appropriate

  • An explanation of the examination findings

  • Discussion of suitable treatment options

  • Chiropractic treatment, when clinically appropriate

Not every patient requires the same examination or treatment.

And occasionally, the most appropriate recommendation is further investigation or referral to another healthcare professional.

The purpose of the initial consultation is to understand the problem before deciding what care may be helpful.

If you're visiting a chiropractor for the first time, you can also read my guide to what happens during your first chiropractic visit.

Why Does the First Chiropractic Visit Cost More?

The initial consultation usually costs more because it involves a more detailed assessment.

Before recommending treatment, your chiropractor needs to understand what may be contributing to your symptoms and whether there are any reasons to avoid or modify particular treatments.

Follow-up appointments are generally shorter because the initial history and examination have already been completed.

However, follow-up care should still involve checking how you're progressing and whether the treatment approach remains appropriate.

A higher consultation fee doesn't automatically mean better care.

And a lower fee doesn't necessarily mean poor care.

What matters is whether you're receiving appropriate assessment, clear explanations and treatment that is relevant to your needs.

Why Do Chiropractor Prices Vary in Gqeberha?

Chiropractic practices are independent businesses, and their fees aren't identical.

Several factors may influence pricing.

Consultation Time and Services

Some appointments are longer than others.

An initial assessment may involve more examination and discussion than a straightforward follow-up visit.

Some practices also provide rehabilitation advice or additional services as part of their consultations.

It's worth asking what's included rather than comparing prices alone.

Practitioner Experience and Approach

Chiropractors may differ in their clinical experience, areas of interest and treatment methods.

But experience alone doesn't guarantee a better outcome.

A good practitioner should be able to explain their findings, recognise when a problem falls outside their scope and recommend care that is appropriate for the individual.

Practice Overheads

Location, staffing, equipment and operating costs can also influence fees.

These are ordinary business considerations and don't necessarily tell you anything about the quality of treatment.

Does Medical Aid Pay for Chiropractic Treatment in South Africa?

Many South African medical aid schemes provide some level of chiropractic cover, but the amount available depends on your scheme and specific option.

It's important not to assume that every medical aid will cover the full consultation fee.

Some plans pay for chiropractic treatment from day-to-day benefits or medical savings.

Others may have specific limits or restrictions.

And some options may provide little or no chiropractic cover.

What Should You Check With Your Medical Aid?

Before booking, I recommend confirming:

  1. Whether your particular medical aid option covers chiropractic consultations

  2. Whether the benefit is paid from savings or a separate allowance

  3. Whether there are annual limits or restrictions

  4. How much the scheme will reimburse for the relevant consultation

  5. Whether you will be responsible for a shortfall

Your medical aid administrator should be able to explain the benefits available under your particular plan.

At our practice, direct medical aid claiming is available where applicable. The fee may differ depending on the billing arrangement, so it's best to confirm the details with reception beforehand.

Remember that medical aid cover doesn't necessarily mean the full fee will be paid.

What If You Don't Have Medical Aid?

You can still visit a chiropractor if you're paying privately.

In fact, many patients prefer to understand the cost upfront and make their own decisions about care.

If you're concerned about affordability, I encourage you to discuss that openly.

Financial circumstances are a legitimate part of healthcare decision-making.

Your treatment recommendations should reflect your clinical needs and goals, and you should understand the likely costs before agreeing to a course of care.

A practitioner should also be willing to discuss reasonable alternatives when ongoing treatment isn't financially practical.

How Many Chiropractic Sessions Will You Need?

This is probably the second most common cost-related question.

And it's not always possible to answer accurately before examining someone.

Some patients improve after only a few appointments.

Others may require a longer period of treatment or rehabilitation.

It depends on factors such as the condition, how long symptoms have been present, how severely they're affecting daily life and how the person responds to care.

I don't believe everyone should automatically receive the same number of chiropractic visits.

The plan should be based on the individual and reviewed as treatment progresses.

Relief Care vs Restorative Care: How Does This Affect Cost?

This is a conversation I regularly have with patients.

When someone comes in with back or neck pain, their immediate priority is often to feel better.

And that's a perfectly reasonable goal.

I describe this as relief care.

But sometimes, once the pain improves, there are still limitations affecting what the person can comfortably do.

They may be avoiding exercise, struggling with particular movements or lacking confidence in returning to an activity they enjoy.

In those circumstances, further rehabilitation may be useful.

I refer to this broader approach as restorative care.

Relief Care

Relief care focuses primarily on reducing current symptoms and improving comfort.

For some patients, this is all the treatment they need.

Restorative Care

Restorative care focuses on addressing remaining functional limitations.

It may include manual therapy, rehabilitation exercises, movement advice and gradual return to normal activities.

It doesn't automatically mean that someone needs more chiropractic adjustments.

And it doesn't mean every patient needs a long-term treatment programme.

The right approach is the one that matches your clinical needs, personal goals and preferences.

It's important to understand the expected benefits and costs of any proposed treatment plan before making a decision.

Are Chiropractic Treatment Packages Worth It?

Some practices offer packages or prepaid blocks of appointments.
